“Rogue Princess” by B.R. Myers

The fate of their world rest on her choice.

As the crown heir of the failing planet of Astor, Princess Delia is duty bound to marry a prince to secure an alliance that will save her kingdom. Secretly dreaming of true love and hoping for a different path than the one she’s on, Delia steals a spaceship only to discover a handsome thief stowed away on board.

“Borrowing” trinkets and tech from the royal palace to make money, Aidan only dreams of getting off the planet and away from his cruel family. He never expected to be on the same ship as a runaway princess but his time is running out.

Sparks and wits fly as Delia and Aidan butt heads and accidentally uncover a dangerous rebel plot. Both must make decisions that could change the fate of their lives and the lives of the Astor.

If you’ve known me for any amount of time, you’ll know that I’m basically obsessed with Cinderella. I can’t pass up a retelling and “Rogue Princess” was no exception. As soon as I (1) saw the gorgeous cover and (2) learned that it was a “gender-swapped sci-fi Cinderella retelling”, I was sold.

B. R. Myers' newest book weaves realistic characters, a fun galactic plot, and themes of destiny and choice to create a fast paced and imaginative retelling of the fairytale classic.

"Rogue Princess" is told from alternating perspectives of Delia and Aidan.

Princess Delia is incredibly headstrong and duty-driven, but she is also a hopeless romantic at times, which is nice to see in a female character. I loved how resilient and brave she is when facing down clingy suitors or renegade rebels.

Aidan’s sarcastic quips, sharp thinking, and quick fingers is quite endearing. I really enjoyed seeing him grow and find his purpose outside of what his family expectations of him are.

Delia and Aidan work together to save the planet but that doesn’t mean they always get along. *wink wink* Both extremely stubborn, they butt heads all the time but their witty banter is fantastic to read. (As a side note, there is definitely some innuendo throughout the dialogue in this book but the scenes stay clean and the entire book is pretty cute, if you ask me.)

My favorite character is Princess Shania, hands down. As the crown princess’ hilarious, sweet-toothed, and slightly boy-crazy younger sister, Shania adds humor and wisdom to each of the scenes she’s in and it’s truly beautiful.

Also, there are Space Pirates™️. ‘Nuff said.

As a loose retelling of Cinderella, B.R. Myers does a great job using only the elements of the original fairytale she needs to keep her book fresh and fun but still a fantastic reimagining. “Rogue Princess” is rich with folklore and tradition of the failing planet of Astor. I loved the way the history and ancestors of Delia’s people propelled the story forward without exposition or an info dump. Because “Rogue Princess” is sci-fi, I expected more “space” but even without rocket ships or galactic travel the author brings in the genre with a unique setting mashup of robot technology, tribal royalty, and sand dune pirates.

I love how fast paced this book is. I was kept on the edge of my seat the whole way by the hard decisions the characters must make and the awesome chemistry between Delia and Aidan. There were also some major twists and turns that I actually freaked out about. Like out loud. Ask my family (they were mildly concerned).

“Rogue Princess” winds together a fun and intriguing plot with themes of duty and choice, loyalty and freedom, and true love of both family and soulmates. Delia and Aidan are wonderful protagonists to root for as you join them on their planetary adventure.

I give “Rogue Princess” 4 out of 5 chomping sandworms.

Until the next book!
